Progressive shock

I'm now moving onto the next job on my VNB project, the front shock is knackered and needs replacing. However I noticed that Allstyles (other shops may also) do a progressive front shock for the VNB. Can someone explain what a progressive shock does, compared to a standard shock? and are they better?

A progressive shock will probably just be the spring rate. The coils are wound tighter towards the springs top, so the lower turns are spaced wider and give a softer ride on the roads ripples then as the spring compresses even more the rate of compression gets harder.
