I backed mine off a bit for the 172, but T5"s run low timing anyway, 16 degrees or so, so just put it back to normal about 5000 miles ago, havnt had a problem since.

this question of where to set the timing up on a malossi 172 kit comes up all to often ,and tbh i just dont get it ,its as if folks just do not read the instructions given with the kits or just would rather second guess malossi,s extensive research and development and basic advice thinking that they somehow know better .
just why would you leave it at the std 16 when adviced to put it at 14 by malossi themselves .

best power band if you retard it to 18° with no real risk of seizure....

well not according to malossi or the info provided in the SIP catalouge ( they also advise 14 to 16 )lol...but each to their own i guess .
it may well feel a bit better lower down the rev range at 18,but i would expect it to suffer at higher revs on that ...guess it also depends on your level of tune and exhaust used .
