I guess you need to figure out which connections are cross connected in which key positions? I've done this with an after market switch before. It's a matter of multimeter and persistence, connect one wire to one side and touch all the others in turn with the other and repeat till you've found all those that are live then change the key position and do it all again

What do you want your wiring to do?
I would start from 1st principles, and then work out what does what within the switches.
Brown from the loom is your live power, all the switches do is distrubute that to the correct areas.
The Black to the loom takes that power back to the rear light and the brake switch...
Pick from ignition switch goes to earth to short the green wire out and kill the engine. Connect green from ignition to green on the loom.
The rest only controls the lights...... Do you want your lights on all the time when the scoot is running... if so you can ignore the ignition switch and just feed the brown to the light switch.....
Have a look at the wiring diagram for your switch, and check what wires are activiated at what point, and as Ross Clark indicates verify this with a multimeter.
A good way to play with what does what is to disconnect your brown from the regulator and connect it to a 12v supply (battery or charger), and connect the earth from the supply to your chassis. Try something... switch the 12v on... what happened etc... switch it off and try again....
Put Multimeter in continuity (diode) mode... connect the two probes together and it beeps... this is how i work out what does what in a circuit to get it going.

One of the problems I have, is that I have a number of diagrams/instructions with different combinations which I can't keep tabs on. I honestly have to say I'm beat!

If you are trying to use the new switch as a replacment for the kill switch your loom green will go to the green on the lamp socket then green to the switch to whatever cable is switched to ground when turned off and the key removed. Use a meter to find the 2 contacts. If you are trying to sort out all the rest remove the green so the scooter will run but normally its all corresponding colours to the lamp socket then see whats not working. Depends if you have only a brown or brown and purple in the loom. Only the brown it will need a loop to the purple or half the things wont have power. This can be done at the back end wìth the round type junction box or at the lamp socket

I've tried every combination. A friend (who's electrical experience which outweighs mine by a mile) has been round twice and doesn't know why it's not working.
I guess I was hoping for a magical sollution or a simple reason that was overlooked. My electrical experience with Lambrettas has always been to just plug it in and away I go. I've never been able to educate myself with electrics. This is right up there with Voodoo tuning.
